PURE DRINKING WATER from “TANK STORAGE”

Yachts, Super Yachts, RV’s, Aircraft & Mobile homes, all share a common problem.

Even the very best Storage Tanks provide an ideal environment for the rapid multiplication of bacteria, algae, fungi, amoebic cysts, microscopic worms, larvae, slime, and other undesirable creatures and plants.

Contaminants can come from many different Water Sources including: FOUL TASTES and ODORS; SPECIFIC PESTICIDES; CRYPTOSPORIA; BACTERIA; VIRUSES and SEDIMENT.

Problem is exacerbated by using different water sources, including “City Water”, these all contain some bacteria, usually non-pathogenic but even “harmless” bacteria can become troublesome if present in sufficient numbers. Ground water sources can contain iron, bacteria and slime in addition to having a higher probability of contamination from sewage intrusion and leaks into water supply aquifers ….. sometime from many miles away. Many sources have been found to contain protozoan pathogens – such as Giardia and chlorine-proof Cryptosporidia.

Campgrounds and Yacht Harbors – particularly those on tidal rivers with floating docks, Pump-out stations and outside toilets are particularly vulnerable to leak and intrusion problems.

PREVENTION: Adding 3 to 6 ppm (Parts per million) of Chlorine (Sodium hypochlorite – readily available under several trade names such as Clorox®, Purex ®, etc.) in potable water storage tanks to keep the tank clean and free of slime, algae and excess bacteria build up.

CHLORINE: Is still the most effective on board treatment, but Chlorine should not be consumed in drinks or used in cooking of foods. although useful for killing many pests, it is not especially effective against cysts and larger parasites (a leading source of dysentery, worldwide) and provides essentially no protection against Cryptosporidia.

Cryptosporidia: There have been many serious cases of infection and even deaths reported from EVEN “safe” water supplies meeting all health safety standards. More than 400,000 people were sickened in Milwaukee, USA by Cryptosporidia in 1993, thousands were hospitalized, and more than 100 deaths were attributed to this parasite. Cryptosporidia, Giardia, and amoebic dysentery cysts, and other chlorine insensitive microorganisms are found essentially everywhere.

TASTE: Foul tastes and odors, sometimes coming from fiberglass storage holding tanks holding chlorinated water, can render water almost undrinkable, especially in concentrations necessary for assured protection from bacteria.

Importantly, in addition to microbiological and aesthetic considerations, It is now well established that chlorine contributes to many known and suspected cancer-inducing agents such as chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and many other halogenated hydrocarbons.

(Halogenated hydrocarbons are hydrocarbon pollutants that link chemically with chlorine, iodine, bromine or flourine.)

This reaction needs only trace amounts of contaminant compounds; and since our nation’s waterways are now practically all contaminated to at least a minor extent, the U.S. Environmental protection Agency (EPA) has estimated that probably ALL water supplies contain at least some cancer causing agents.

ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO OBTAIN PURE DRINKING WATER:

You can have your crew or family Lug expensive Bottled Drinking Water from the Supermarket, or load and unload Truckloads of pallets of plastic wrapped bottles from the dock onboard – and Store hundreds of full and empty containers aboard – When you already have a supply of water stored in Tanks that can be treated to better than bottled water quality for cooking and Drinking?

There are literally dozens of “Proprietory” water systems on the market that “Filter” SOME of the possible contaminants based on; Charcoal Filter, Pre-coat Carbon, Carbon Block, Ultraviolet Radiation, Distillation or Reverse Osmosis Technology. Some Charcoal filters have actually been shown to support the growth of bacteria. And the fact that some units are EPA registered creates a great deal of confusion

MAX’S MESSAGE FOR APRIL

You may have seen this past week a National Report on Tap Water Quality?

The EWG (Environmental Working Group, December 2005) discovered 140 contaminants with no regulated or enforceable safety limits were found in the Nation’s drinking water? Fact is that EWG found 260 contaminants in this study which covered 22 million tap water quality tests – more than half of them have no standards.

The investigation revealed major gaps in the system of Public health protection – however, EWG also found a clear commitment to comply with safety standards once developed with over 90 percent compliance with enforceable health standards by the Nation’s utilities. The problem is that EPA has not established standards and monitoring requirements for scores of widespread water contaminants.
